How It All Started

In 2012, Kristie Fisher founded Big Bones Canine Rescue Service, Inc. It began as a small rescue effort, run by one woman with a huge heart for helping dogs in need. In fact, it really started in the early 2000s when Kristie took her first “rescue” dog under her wing. Over time, friends would comment about Kristie’s heart and encouraged her to turn her boarding facility into a formal rescue operation. With the support of her family, her dream came to fruition and Big Bones Canine Rescue Service, Inc. was formed.

Present Day

Since then, Big Bones has grown exponentially. Still based in Windsor Colorado, we successfully rescued nearly 2,000 dogs in 2020 with over 90% of them being from high kill areas. Unlike some rescues, we prefer to focus our efforts on adult and senior dogs in need, but puppies have our hearts, too. Our volunteer base consists of over 400 people that assist with everything from pulling a dog from the shelter to finalizing the adoption process with BBCR adopters.

Today, Big Bones is still 100% run by volunteers. We believe the success of our rescue is built on the ownership and pride each and every one of our volunteers feels in this organization – fosters, home checkers, transporters, donors, event coordinators, web based marketers, foster coordinators, and the day-to-day caregivers at our facility are all personally invested and give of their time and energy for the greater good of the dogs in our care.

Our Facility

Our brick & mortar facility, located in Windsor, CO, has recently undergone some renovations (as a result of a fire) and is licensed to house up to 30 dogs. What sets our facility apart from others is the home-like feel of the environment. Kristie lives onsite with her family so the dogs have constant supervision. The long-timers even have large outdoor portions of their runs that have shade trees and porches.
